Bedwetting in the night alarm clock

The night alarm clock, also called a bedwetting alarm, is one of the most effective ways against bedwetting. In this article, we'll tell you more about how it works.

When do we talk about bedwetting?

Bedwetting, also called enuresis nocturna, is the result of involuntary emptying of the bladder while sleeping. This is considered a problem when, based on age, you can expect it not to happen again. In practice, this is between the ages of 5 and 6.

Although parents may still sometimes think that this is because the child is lazy or seeks negative attention in this way, this is almost never the culprit.

Causes of bedwetting

There may be several causes underlying bedwetting. Important variables may include the child's history, gender, age or state of mind. Below is a list of the most common reasons that a night alarm can play a role in.

  1. Not being able to recognize the signal of a full bladder
This is by far the most common cause of bedwetting. The bladder sends signals to the brain that it is reaching its maximum capacity. The brain fails to translate these signals into waking up so your child can go to the bathroom. Once the bladder gets to its maximum capacity, it empties itself from a protective mechanism.
  2. Low bladder capacity
In some children, underdevelopment of the bladder occurs. The healthcare specialist can determine this through examinations. They often recommend that certain exercises be performed to increase the capacity of the bladder. In some cases, these exercises go along with the night alarm clock.
  3. A medical cause
Less than 1 percent of children who suffer from bedwetting have a medical problem. This could be a urinary tract infection, but diabetes, insufficient ADH hormone or sleep apnea are possible triggers of bedwetting.

How does a night alarm clock work?

The purpose of a night alarm is to help the child's brain better recognize the signals of a full bladder.

When the child goes to bed, it follows the Dryly bedtime ritual. An important part is for the child to put on the Dryly underwear before bed. Attached to these underwear can be pressed the Dryly transmitter that detects if an accident occurs.

If an accident occurs, the transmitter immediately sends a message to the Dryly receiver that is inside Wizzu the panda bear toy. Wizzu the panda bear sends a message to your device via the Wi-Fi network via the Dryly app. In addition to this, Wizzu the panda bear also immediately plays an alarm sound which wakes up the child immediately.

The child is awakened the moment the bladder empties because there is no more capacity to store urine. This helps the brain learn to better recognize the signal of a full bladder. As the night alarm training progresses, the child will wake up more and more easily to these signals.

What is a good time to start using the night alarm clock?

We often hear this question from parents. First and foremost, every child is unique and it is always a good idea to talk to your doctor.

Assuming an "average" situation, we recommend considering the night alarm if the child is at least 5 years old and is self-motivated to stop bedwetting.

This is because one of the most important success factors for achieving dry nights is the child's motivation. With the Dryly night alarm, the child is encouraged by a point system. Each time the bedtime ritual is completed, the child earns points that Wizzu can be personalized with in the app.

Besides age and motivation, it is important that there are few other major events happening in the child's life. By using the night alarm, the child (and the parents!) will experience restless nights because they will be woken up at every accident. Then it does not help if the child is already fatigued by other circumstances.
